The World Environment Day takes places every year on the 5th of June. Each year on this day, Veolia puts up a global initiative to raise awareness on environemntal issues. With the second volume of "Together, committed to the Environment" we encourage our employees to share their daily contribution to preserve our environment and help resourcing the world.
Among nearly 40 best practices shared by our employees, our EXCO team selected the 5 best entries at the end of September. Congratulations to our winners Yvonne, Peggy, Charlotte, Ellis and Lina (from left to right)! You can find their winning entries among all submissions listed below.

We grow our own organic herbs and fruit trees. They not only provide shade as the temperature now is getting more and more unbearable, we also get to enjoy the fruits of our “labour”. We get to savour naturally ripe papaya and we will pick the lime fruit to make a nice cool drink when the heat gets unbearable. Besides that, we get to pick some curry leaves when mum wants to cook curry back home or pandan leaves when cooking dessert. And the best thing is, we need not to worry about chemical residues in our plants!
As an executive member in the Public Hygiene council appointed by the Minister of MEWR, I voluntarily selected a designated “Bright Spot” at Toa Payoh Town Garden to solicit/ recruit for public volunteers to organize a litter-picking and recycling of waste event at site, in May 2015. Today, there are 420 “Bright Spot” which the council has taken ownership in Singapore. This activity is to promote public awareness on anti-littering and waste sorting & recycling.
A total of 40 volunteers from internal organizations, NEA, Nparks, Municipal Council and DPC were recruited for this event. Total volume of litter collected is about 15 kg and 5 kg of recyclable material are sorted and send for recycling.
I am an inspired mother of 2 and I have so much to do. I carry these two bags in my bag and I do not have to worry wherever I go. I believe in reusing and it all makes cents!
In my everyday life there are many simple ways I reuse. I reach out for less wrap, I refuse plastic bags, I use shopping paper bags to wrap books and as gift wraps, I used bottle caps to teach my little ones A,B,C or used their daddy's big T-Shirts to cut it to style as sleeping wear for them. Before I throw away anything, I ponder and wonder if I can reuse, recycle, restyle or rewear it!
I care for the earth, my action counts!
